Amy, Amy, Amy: The Mania Continues With New Documentary About Winehouse

July 23rd will mark the fourth year since Amy Winehouse’s untimely death at the cursed age of 27 from alcohol poisoning. The “commemorative” items that have been released into the world in the wake of her demise, from albums (Lioness: Hidden Treasures) to a statue in Camden Town, have, so far, not been in egregiously poor taste. So here’s hoping the upcoming documentary (to be released July 3rd in the U.K.) about her, titled–succinctly–Amy, will prove worthy of the iconic chanteuse.

Although Wino Forever or Winehouse seem like more appropriate titles for a woman who lived her life as an unapologetic hot mess who hit the bottle whenever the mood struck her, one imagines the simple elegance of Amy is what her father/controller of her Estate, Mitch Winehouse, approved of.

With Universal Music Group standing to gain some profit from the documentary, many a buzz word has been bandied about, including “previously unreleased tracks,” “unseen archive footage” and “in her own words” (presumably, this means there will be some voiceover narration from Winehouse at times, or maybe someone else reading her journal or some shit. Who knows?). While documentaries about dead celebrities have been made countless times in the past, there is something about this one that seems to possess a lot more pressure on itself to be the end-all, be-all source for Winehouse fans. But building up that kind of impossible to fulfill expectation could mean the documentary is merely PBS worthy–not rockumentary worthy.
