Sweetie Dahling, Did It Really Take You 20 Years to Finish the AbFab Script?

Absolutely Fabulous has been a staple for alcohol-loving, luxe life enthusiast Brits and non-Brits alike since the show first aired in 1992. Resuscitated more times than Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) herself, the show was revived for a fourth series in 2001 (and again in 2011 and 2012 with three 20th anniversary episodes), leaving one to believe that this would be the last glimpse of the hot messes known as Patsy and Edina (Jennifer Saunders).

However, according to Saunders herself, she started writing the script for a movie version of AbFab twenty years ago. Undoubtedly–if Saunders is anything like Edina (which we know she is)–the large bulk of this twenty years was procrastination rather than actual writing. Indeed, it’s presumable that this is not going to be an epic two and a half hour film so much as a ninety minute romp.

While it would have been mildly impressive if the result of this twenty year writing period yielded something particularly extraordinary in terms of character development, it’s likely that the AbFab movie, entitled simply, Patsy and Edina, will most probably be more of the same. But alas, the real Edina Monsoon needs time to get through writing a script if she’s going to be expected to continue her busy schedule of drinking and indulging.
