RIP Gwyneth and Chris

Though some were surprised by the “uncoupling” of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, it seemed a long time coming. The fact that the two had rarely been seen together in recent months was surely a telltale side. Considering both of their careers have taken something of a downturn (Martin is joining The Voice and Paltrow hasn’t made a truly good move since The Royal Tenenbaums), it’s no wonder that they would feel a certain stress in their relationship as well.

Basics united no more.
Basics united no more.

Though their separation is tragic when taking into account how long they’ve been together (ten years, the celebrity marriage cutoff), it’s more melancholy-inducing when considering that they were the perfect basic couple. Pale, mild-mannered and similarly dressed, these two seemed like they would never even consider wanting to find someone else. And then there is the fact that they both agreed on the children’s names Apple and Moses. Where else would they find another like-minded soul to agree to such preposterous monikers?

Once upon a time in love.
Once upon a time in love.

But maybe Gwyneth and Chris know what they’re doing–or maybe this is all just “lifestyle” fodder for Goop. Everyone is well aware that nothing heightens publicity like a good breakup. So perhaps in the end, the famous duo has given each other a gift greater than love: Increased fame.
