Every time the public is determined to permanently write Courtney Love off as nothing more than a drug-addled gold digger who lucked out on fame by attaching her wagon to Kurt Cobain’s, she manages to come out with music that forces us to remember that, yes, she’s a grunge goddess.
The latest example of this is the ominous cooing intro of her new single, “Miss Narcissist,” which is being released by Nathan Williams’ (of Wavves) Ghost Ramp label as a 7″ single in the coming months. Not quite as drone-y as Live Through This‘ “Miss World,” “Miss Narcissist” is a modernized imagining of Love’s 90s grunge sensibilities.

Speaking of herself (and undoubtedly others she has known), Love belts, “Magnificent and obvious, bless us with your presence and your paranoia.” Feeding in to how critics see her, it’s apparent that Love is more self-aware than people give her credit for. Continuing on her salient lyrical binge, Love describes how Miss Narcissist “sucked out all the energy.” Considering this is how many view her effect on Cobain, it’s an all too appropriate description. Throwing in another recognition of herself with “Miss Narcissist is us versus them,” Love accurately tells of a war between the actual self and the idealized image of oneself.
