If you asked most American fans of Kristen Stewart what a César Award was, they would probably scratch their heads quizzically and belch. Best known for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight series, it’s hard to imagine any sort of committee that has bequeathed a Best Actress award to the likes of Isabelle Adjani, Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard also feeling that Kristen Stewart falls somewhere along the same lines.
Nonetheless, Stewart has become the first American actress to win one of the coveted French awards celebrating cinematic accomplishment. Her supporting role in Olivier Assayas’ (best known to Americans for having a segment in Paris, Je T’aime) latest film, Clouds of Sils Maria, as Valentine, the assistant to an aging actress named Maria Enders (incidentally, played by Juliette Binoche), has proven her first significant step toward not being forever relegated to the moniker “the actress from Twilight.”
Recently, Stewart’s attempts at taking on more “serious” movies have proven successful, provided she’s in a supporting role, as was the case with the well-received Still Alice starring Julianne Moore. Perhaps this is all just a jumping off point toward branching out as the lead actress in a non-Twilight film. Thus far, we only have The Runaways as any real indication of what she’s capable of. In the meantime, the Frenchies “get” her.
