It Would Be Quite Lovely If Lana Del Rey Would Stop Posting “Ethereal” Selfies

As a general rule, most selfies are extremely uncomfortable for the intended audience. Even and especially when it’s a celebrity. Case in point is Lana Del Rey’s recent string of natural, no makeup photos. Staring listlessly into the void (giving one even greater insight into her music), LDR seems to be looking at you with eyes that say, “I just got out of rehab and could very well relapse at any moment.”

Her stoic, non-committal expression once again calls into question how she was able to achieve fame considering she has all the presence and charm of a cauliflower. Appearing vacuous and removed, Lana Del Rey asks nothing of us but to look and apprehend, though of what, we’re not sure. Is there meaning or intent behind this very distinct set of selfies? Probably not–and that’s part of the problem.

In fact, this selfie phase is like so much of LDR’s work: disengaged and disinterested. These two words are the foundation on which she has built her career–a strategy that has been successful for her music, but fails to translate well into the art of the selfie.
