Finally, A New Classic Christmas Song From Loose Tapestries a.k.a. Noel Fielding and Serge Pizzorno

Every year, we are subjected to the same tired Christmas songs from Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Destiny’s Child, NSYNC and, sometimes, Bing Crosby. But at long last, a new original Christmas-themed track has come to invigorate our minds and delight our hearts–and who better to deliver said track than The Mighty Boosh‘s Noel Fielding and Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno?

As the intro to the song explains, “Can’t Wait For Christmas” stemmed from the somewhat embellished backstory: “‘Twas Christmas Eve and all were sleeping–all but the Loose Tapestries, who were writing a Christmas song. A new kind of Christmas song. That could be inhaled like a gas. Or sprinkled into the eyes of sleeping children. Drunk on egg nog, these bombastic minstrels slipped down chimneys and pumped their new song into every turkey in England. This was their gift to the nation. For they were the Loose Tapestries.” And even for the non-English, the song is indeed a gift.

From this point on, the song bursts into the jubilant chorus, repeating, “Can’t wait for Christmas to come,” featuring the sort of energy that might only be bottled from the souls of youths under ten. The black and white video, directed by Fielding’s Luxury Comedy collaborator Nigel Coan, is as simplistic in its sophistication as the song, with a Mighty Boosh-esque surreal aesthetic as Fielding and Pizzorno’s alter egos, Vacuum Cloud and The Decision, appear on the screen as bobbleheads with nutcracker mouths. Around the third minute, Idris Elba (who recently reminded people he was a musician by opening for Madonna on her Rebel Heart Tour) joins in on the vocals for a rap recitation of all the things he wants, as well as a possible homage to Old Gregg by mentioning that he’s sipping on Bailey’s. By the end of it, you, too, will be unable to wait for Christmas–and also wonder how you’ve been listening to Mariah’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” every December without going insane.
