Charli XCX & Mura Masa Join Forces to Give A Touch of Poetry to the One-Night Stand

As Americans in general and youthful ones specifically become less tantalized than ever by the prospect of sex, it’s reassuring that “young ones” Charli XCX and British DJ Mura Masa would come together to bring us a fanciful, island-y homage to the one-night stand called, aptly, “1 Night.”

Opening with an ear-hooking marimba backed beat, a wistful quality is automatically embedded in the track. Establishing the feeling a person gets after downing enough liquor while out in the public sphere, one imagines Charli XCX thinking, “Your are somethin’ special/twenty-karat solid gold,” just as she’s taken another shot and happens to lock eyes with a guy that’s not completely unfortunate looking across the room.

But remember, this is a one-night stand, and initial attraction can usually only sustain itself for the duration of the night before the spell wears off, Cinderella-style. Hence, Charli XCX adds, “What we had was precious, but I had to let you go”–the perfect sentiment for scuttling quietly out the door in the morning. Speaking in line with the current landscape of the early twenties millennial, Charli XCX explains, “I’m not the type of girl who wants serious affection,” as a means to justify the benefits of a one-night stand and as a pre-apology to her lover de la nuit.

Even so, regardless of possessing an attitude of overall unflappability, Charli XCX can’t help but wax poetic at times by remarking, “It was only one night, but I wanna go back to where we were.” Whatever your stance on the fast food enterprise of sex–the one-night stand–Chrali XCX and Mura Masa will definitely leave you with pause to think about some of the ones you’ve had in the past. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on who you’ve allowed access to your body.
